Axiata Appoints New Independent Non-Executive Director to its Board
Kuala Lumpur, 21 March 2017 – Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata) today announced the appointment of Dato’ Dr Nik Ramlah Nik Mahmood, (aged 61), Malaysian, as an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) of its Board effective today. Dr Nik Ramlah’s appointment reflects the Board’s focus and commitment towards strengthening its composition with the right skills, experience, diversity and independence.
Dr Nik Ramlah served at the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) for almost 23 years, retiring on 31 March 2016 after completing two terms as Deputy Chief Executive. As Deputy Chief Executive, Dr Nik Ramlah was the only other executive member of the SC Board apart from the Chairman. In her role she was responsible for the SC’s Supervision and Enforcement functions. She also played an integral role in supporting the Chairman in the administration and management of the Commission.
Throughout her years in the SC, Dr Nik Ramlah has been instrumental in developing many areas of the capital market. She has extensive experience in specialised functions ranging from regulatory policy, legal reform, product and market development, corporate governance, Islamic capital market, investor education and enforcement.
She joined the SC in 1993 as Manager of Law Reform and went on to become Director of the Policy and Development Division in 1997. In 2008, she was made Managing Director and Executive Director of the Enforcement Division. Prior to joining the SC, Dr Nik Ramlah was an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya where she had also served as Deputy Dean.
Currently, Dr Nik Ramlah is a member of the Board of Directors of United Malacca Berhad, Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia, the Securities Industry Development Corporation and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad. She is also a member of the Professional Development Panel (Senate) of INCEIF, the global university for Islamic finance and an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA.
Dr Nik Ramlah holds a First Class Honours in Law from University Malaya and a LLM and PhD from University of London.
