2010-04-20

Kuala Lumpur, 20 April 2010 - Axiata Group Berhad (“Axiata”), took top honours at the Telecom Asia awards, bagging three awards in total for the Group. Axiata was voted Best Regional Mobile Group for its operations in multiple Asian markets, whilst Celcom Axiata, its Malaysian mobile arm, took the prize for Best Mobile Carrier. Alongside these, Axiata's CEO Dato' Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim was voted Telecom CEO of the Year for his performance at the helm of the company, achieving “outstanding financial performance” in a difficult environment over the past 12 months, the judges' citation said.

“We would like to thank Telecom Asia for the recognition. It is a great honour to be recognised by them, given the players in the region. 2009 was a watershed year for the group, fuelled by strong performances across the Group. The awards are recognition of the Group's strong presence and continued success in the region's telecommunications market as well as an acknowledgement of our transformation, barely a year since we became Axiata,” said Dato' Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, President and Chief Executive Officer of Axiata.

The awards were chosen by a panel of more than 20 judges, comprising industry analysts and editors, who judged operators on their innovation, market leadership and operational performance. The Awards, Asia's most prestigious telecommunications industry honours, have been presented every year since 1998 by Telecom Asia magazine.

"We congratulate Dato' Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim and the Axiata Group in taking the honors in three categories in this year's Telecom Asia Awards," said Telecom Asia Group Editor Joseph Waring.

"Axiata was the standout performer at this year's awards, thanks to its outstanding financial performance in its key markets of Malaysia and Indonesia in difficult conditions over the past 12 months. Mr Ibrahim also won personal recognition as Telecom CEO of the Year for his role in leading Axiata's successful demerger and IPO."

“We are very pleased with the awards and have to give due recognition to all employees of the Group, who stepped up their efforts last year to achieve such strong results. For the Best Mobile Carrier award to Celcom, I congratulate all Celcom employees and in particular Dato' Sri Shazalli Ramly, for his strong and creative leadership. The awards are testament to all the hard work and efforts at the Group and across all our operating companies,” Dato' Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim concluded.
