TMI Appoints Group Chief Operating Officer (Group COO)

TMI announced that Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, who is currently the Group Chief Executive of Dialog Telekom PLC, will additionally be appointed as its Group Chief Operating Officer (Group COO) effective 1 September 2008.

“TMI is currently strengthening its organisation by bringing in world class talent at all levels”, said Dato' Jamaludin Ibrahim, President and Group Chief Executive of TMI. “We are in a unique position as we also have access to talent from within, developed over a decade of operations in the Asian region. Dr. Wijayasuriya's appointment as Group COO falls in line with our philosophy of providing opportunities to our internal talent whilst bringing in external talent into the Group. He will add an invaluable dimension to the TMI management team, having a wealth of operational experience behind him. Dr. Wijayasuriya will focus on driving superior performance across all the operating companies through rigorous performance management and operational improvement processes. It reflects our new strategy where we need to shift our focus significantly to drive organic growth and in-country performance”, added Jamaludin.

Dr. Wijayasuriya has been the Chief Executive of Dialog Telekom plc for over a decade since 1997 and together with a founding management team, who head the multiple facets of Dialog's business, has seen the company evolve from being the 4thentrant to Sri Lanka's mobile sector to the position of market leader and largest market capitalized company on the Colombo Stock Exchange.

An experienced and long standing management team has been a key strength of the Dialog Telekom Group enabling it to expand from mobile-centric foundations to a quad-play formulation. The organization is currently very well positioned to adapt to Dr. Wijayasuriya's additional role as TMI's Group COO, with a robust management team already in place at each individual business unit – mobile, TV, International, Fixed/Broadband and Tele-infrastructures, being headed by their respective CEOs. Within his role as Dialog's Group CEO, he will continue to focus on managing the strategic and tactical initiatives of the company to enhance its leadership position in Sri Lanka's telecommunications sector. Dr. Wijayasuriya will continue to be based out of Colombo.

Dialog has over the last decade won several domestic and international accolades under the stewardship of Dr Hans Wijayasuriya. Dialog became the first GSM Operator in the world to win 3 consecutive GSM World awards (2001-2003), and also the first telecommunications operator in South Asia to win the Asia Pacific Quality Award (2002).More recently Dialog Telekom secured the Operating Company of the Year Award at the TM Group Awards in 2005 and 2006 and secured the No 1 company slot in Sri Lanka's Business Today "Top 10" ranking in 2007.

Dr. Wijayasuriya, a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology (FIET) is an alumni of Cambridge University (UK) and holds a PhD in Digital Mobile Communications from the University of Bristol (UK) and an MBA from the University of Warwick (UK). A past Chairman of GSM Asia Pacific, Dr. Wijayasuriya counts over 15 years in Mobile Communications. Commenting further on Dr. Wijayasuriya's appointment, Jamaludin said, “The Board welcomes his appointment as Dr. Wijayasuriya has always been highly regarded by the business community in Sri Lanka, his peers in other countries and by the TMI Board.
